Make A Smile Challenge

Sophie Dixon

The Make A smile Challenge 2010 was held at Saltram Park, Plympton on Wednesday 17th February 2010.

100 children braved the terrible weather and walked 3500 metres (2.1 miles) around Saltram, raising money for the 'Make A Smile Appeal' and 'Chernobyl Children's Lifeline' charities.

One child in particular, a real superstar, was six year old Sophie Dixon, who completed the walk and raised the most money - over £150.

What makes this even more remarkable is that when she was born her parents were told that she would not be able to walk more than one side of a room to another. She has a condition called 1p36, which means she is missing a chromosome, has a problem with her sight and hearing and learning difficulties.

Sophie’s reward for raising the most money was a trip to Plympton Fire Station as well as free tickets to Flambards Park.

Billy Wiz the magician also surprised Sophie by turning up at her house, on her birthday to give her the good news about her reward for raising so much money as well as presenting her with a huge balloon.

Sophie's trip around Plympton fire station certainly was a success. With the help of Graham Wilson and fire fighter Trevor Jeans, her smile was beaming as she sat in the front seats of various fire engines as well as an ambulance.
